So I don't actually have a list of shopping rules written down anywhere (I probably should) but I do have a loose set of guidelines in my head I try and shop by. One of them (we'll call it #9) is this: "If you continue to think about an item after you passed it up and can picture multiple ways you will wear it, it is worth going back for." I love trying on clothes, especially sparkly impractical cocktail dresses that I have no need for. So many times I can walk away knowing I don't "need" that piece. But every now and then an item will keep popping up in my head or I'll find myself wishing I had it for a certain outfit. When that happens I figure it means it will probably be worth the purchase.
That happened with these pants. After spotting several bloggers wearing the Current/Elliott gray leopard skinnies, I knew I loved them, but was never going to spend the $198 for them. Then I saw these VERY similar jeans at Target for $23 (God bless that store), but still said no for the sake of self control. Several weeks passed and I knew they needed to call my closet home. Now we are very happy together.
Kitty never passes up an opportunity to be in a photo
Do you have any shopping rules you live by?

omg i SO have that rule!! i especially have that rule when i dream of it! you ever have that?? that shit is scary when it enters your dreams but its true! lol then im even more sure im destined to have em! and they are cute so GOOD! glad you got the :) plus major cheap!!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely have a similar rule! I try not to spend a lot of money on trendy pieces and only invest in things I see myself wearing more than a few times. A $200 equipment blouse that you wear a good 40 or 50 times ends up being a lot cheaper per wear than a F21 $25 top you wear once.
ReplyDeleteOkay, maybe this is a sign that I need to go back and get these jeans too. I tried them on last week and put them back, but they seem to keep popping up everywhere I turn...including your post! EEEK! What's a girl to do? LOL!
ReplyDeleteBecause Shanna Said So
i follow the exact same rule!! i think it is a really good one!

I had a feeling you'd go back for them! I love that you wrote we are very happy together. I always go by the cost per wear rules Stacy and Clinton utilize on what not to wear, I'll divide the total price of the item by a realistic number of times I'll wear. And, normally I'm pretty good about being realistic, although there was this one time I bought these shoes and knowingly lied to myself about how many times I'd wear them b/c I wanted them so bad!
ReplyDeleteI love those pants. I get those feelings all the time!
ReplyDeleteoooh shopper's remorse:-) definitely my rule. helps cut down on impulse purchases, (cut down, not eliminate, cause let's be honest...it happens:-) xoxo
ReplyDeleteMy only shopping rule is that I have to be able to wear whatever I'm about to buy with a variety of other things in my closet, as to kinda stretch out my options. &&& I love those leopard pants! Target is THE BEST!!
ReplyDeleteYou are about the only person in the world that could pull those off :) Truly...you rock. I think the main shopping rule I have is don't buy it just because it is on sale (did this for YEARS). It helps because my husband is a net zero type soul: one item in, one item out :)

Glad you have so much sun down there-send some our way!
hahah- that is so funny because sometimes I do envision that but I know I don't need it so this is what i do:
ReplyDeleteI either:
1) try it on and wear it for a long time looking at myself in the mirror with it (to get the feeling I own it)
2) have my friend try it on and look at her wearing it for a long time so I embrace the vibe that piece has
3) [this one is sad] if it's a purse I will hold it and walk around the store with it while I am shopping then put it back before I buy it
LOL.... ^_^

You broke down and bought them!! Good call :) I LOVE mine. We should compare ideas for how to wear them because I'm mildly stumped... Obviously white or black works... I was thinking a splash of neon would be cute... Perhaps stripes? Or a bight colored top. But I'm not too sure about shoes. What do you think? Keep them neutral? Any ideas are welcome!
ReplyDeleteOh, and my main shopping rule is like yours... I need to LOVE the piece in an outfit, not just by itself.
They look amazing on you - love them! I too follow that rule. I hate when I pass up something good and then can't stop thinking about it. All too often I do the opposite, buy something and then never wear it. Shopping can be tricky!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, how did I miss this post. Second of all, I'm so jealous of how these pants fit you! I tried them on, and they just didn't look right :(
ReplyDeleteI live by this shopping rule too. I'm trying to have better self control... but when I can't stop thinking about an item and think of several outfits in my head, I definitively go back and make the purchase.
I love those pants. I get those feelings all the time!
