Feathered Frocks

I think there is a small (or very large) part of me that never grew out of the dress-up/princess/Barbie days of my not-so-distant youth. I'm totally convinced that if it were socially acceptable, and not completely humiliating to those associated with me, I would leave the house in fur coats, tulle tutu's, sparkly high heels, and diamond accessories galore (including a tiara). You think I'm kidding but I'm not. It's the girly girl in me that loves embracing my femininity in the most fun and fancy ways possible. When I spot these items, my heart does a little flip flop and my eyes start to sparkle and I can't help but smile.

One of those items that I've been noticing lately is feathers (sparking memories of feather boas) on skirts, dresses, and yes, even shoes. I love it. Here are some fun looks I found and am using for inspiration to find my own feathery outfit one of these days.

A little much but I still sort of love it.

Feathers AND Sequins. Delicious.

Sue Wong from Nordstrom

Feather Vest from Forever 21

Juicy Couture Skirt from Saks

Louboutin's. Amazing.

Would you incorporate feathers into your everyday looks or save them for a fabulous, fancy party look?

Loving...West Elm

West Elm is probably the furniture store that best embodies my home decorating style. I love how it's modern yet somehow still whimsical and cozy. And how they mix different textures together from their throw pillows to their rugs to their lighting. And fortunately for me, there's one at the bottom of my building! I don't go in it too often though, I don't like torturing myself with things I can't buy (though their prices are really reasonable compared to other home stores). But when I do stroll through, I take mental notes of my favorite items and the most visually appealing displays. Here are some of the things I'm loving right now...

Hammered Vases. $29-$69

Metal Bendy Straws. So fun. $3.50 each

Short Drum Pendant. $149

Antique Tiled Floor Mirror. $359

Striped Duvet Cover and Shams. $16-$79

Tiled Capiz Table Lamp. $149

Mongolian Lamb Pillow Covers. $49-$129

Gilded-Grasscloth Pillow Cover. $39

I also stumbled across this fun feature on their website for the first time: city guides! They highlight different cities with a guide on what to eat, where to stay and shop, and things to discover. Here's Portland's :)

I think one of my favorite compliments is when people tell me that I've inspired them to start painting their nails more. Especially when they begin to experience the joy that accompanies it. Just my small gift to the world I guess. A lot of people ask me how I have the time to always paint my nails, and that was the same hesitation I used to have when it came to painting mine. Because I knew they would only last a few days before chipping - and I don't do chipping - so therefore it was not worth the 3 hrs of time I felt was necessary to invest in a nail painting sesh. So here are some of my tips for overcoming that and getting you well on your way to glossy and gorgeous nails:

  • Really you just need about 30 min total to set aside. And preferably in the evening. Morning nail paintings usually end in smudges and swear words. So maybe while your favorite show is on, or when you know you'll be on your computer for awhile.
  • Use a good base coat that protects your nails. My nails got pretty destroyed and dried out from all the painting and removing so I bought Miracle Cure from Sally Hansen and it seems to work really well.
  • Pick your color!!!!! This is my favorite part. Sometimes I get excited days in advance thinking about the next color I'm going to use. Another day I'll post all my favorites.
  • I usually do two coats of color unless it's glitter or super sheer. I think my record was seven coats of gold glitter once (that didn't include base or top coats). I'm a perfectionist so I really focus on painting them evenly and try to remove the excess from around my nails as quickly as possible. Wait a few minutes between each coat so it's not too goopy and you don't get bubbles.
  • Top coat. A good one. Love Hoof Lacquer that I order off Amazon. The more I put on, the longer they last.
  • Wave your hands wildly back and forth to dry. Ok you don't have to do this one, but I do and I hope my neighbors aren't watching when I'm pacing around my apartment looking like a deranged bird.
  • Then just chill for awhile (who doesn't love an excuse to sit still and do nothing for a little bit?) Within a few minutes your nails will already be semi-dry and then just be careful about any intense nail-to-objects contact within the next 20 minutes and you should be fine.
  • Enjoy your pretty finger tips :)

I recently re-arranged my collection. I had it in this cubby of my bookshelf which made viewing and selecting colors very difficult. These bottles deserve a front and center stage.

I understand that this looks a little like an entrance to a nail salon. But I always wanted an apartment that was completely girly - chandeliers, InStyle's and Nordstrom catalogs strewn about, nail polish and jewelry collections fully visible - before I got married and had to compromise on a slightly more gender-neutral design scheme. So for now, having a shelf full of beautiful bottles, organized by color, staring down at me while I blog makes me incredibly happy.

J. Crew Faves

I love getting my new J. Crew catalogs in the mail. I pore over every outfit, not so much searching for items to buy (most seem to be just a smidge out of my price range), but more for inspiration on style and putting outfits together. This recent catalog reminded me of some basics to add to my future shopping list as well as fun fantasy items to add to my always-growing "wish list." Basics I've wanted for awhile: cropped black pants and a chambray shirt. Loving: stripes and one-pieces. I've actually always loved one-pieces, I just never wear them cuz who doesn't want their stomach tan?! Delicate bracelet and sequin dress: gorgeous. Though the dress looked ten times better in the catalog. Purse: I want you.

Have a dazzling day xoxo

The Real Valentine's Day

So I guess I lied about Monday being my last Valentine's Day post. Sorry. But I just needed to add a few more things. As much as I truly do love Valentine's Day and everything that surrounds it, I also do know that it is a commercially created holiday that forces romance on unsuspecting husbands and boyfriends everywhere. And I always feel a twinge of guilt when flowers and a nice dinner seem to be the expectation. But I will say my boyfriend really stepped up to the plate this Valentine's Day (our first together actually). I know that everyone and their mom posted all the beautiful flowers and wonderful things their significant others did for them on facebook or whatever, but rather than do it for bragging rights or trying to one-up someone else, I really wanted to share my gratitude for everything that was done for me. I'm sure that flowers have got to feel like the biggest waste of money to guys, and I know that a nice dinner adds up really quickly. But it doesn't go unappreciated and these lovely things made my day:

Bouquet #1

Bouquet #2. Perfect right next to my bed

LOVE these ones

Yummy dinner at Piazza Italia. My favorite Italian place in Portland. And conveniently down the street from me.

Drinks at Teardrop. They had a "Bloody Valentine" theme that night with blood orange inspired drinks. Ours were delicious.

The menu. I got the Gin Fizz, Darwin got the Lemonade

So thank you Valentine. I had a wonderful night with you and love love love my pretty flowers.

Also, every year I'm reminded of the verse "we love because He first loved us" (1 John 4:19) on Valentine's Day. And every year it blows me away. What an amazing truth to realize that we are only capable of experiencing real, pure and authentic love because it was first displayed to us from the Creator of the universe. I was really blessed by that thought this year. Glittery hearts and pink funfetti cupcakes PALE in comparison to the fact that I am loved and cherished by Jesus and it quickly put into perspective the idea that I am "owed" something on this day. I have everything I could ever need in that Love and my job is to turn around and pour that out. Working on that, but grateful nonetheless.

See I knew I loved this day :)

Just a Little Gwyneth Grammy Love

Did you see Gwyneth at the Grammy's?! Neither did I. I went to sleep. But I should have stayed up (looking back I actually think I turned the TV off right when the song she performed in started, I didn't know she would be singing then). Anyways, after recapping and looking at photos, ONCE AGAIN Miss Paltrow has me totally in awe. Please enjoy her fabulous outfits and a link to her super fun performance as well. Love you Gwyney and still hoping to look just like you when I grow up.

LOVE her dress and shoes!

So fun. Notice the hot pink feather earrings, sexy bodysuit, and amazing shoes.

As soon as you figure out a way to import all three of these outfits into my closet, please let me know immediately.

Go here to watch her totally fun singing duet.

Thank you for wowing and entertaining us once again Gwyneth.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Well the day has finally arrived. I wanted to re-cap a few of the V-Day-ish things I did this year and wish you a most wonderful day filled with love, sparkles, sprinkles, hearts, chocolate, flowers, jewelry, red dresses, pink nail polish, big kisses, and hugs that melt your insides. And if you hate this day, well this is my last post about it for at least 11 months, so you are in luck :) Big X's and O's from me to you.

Christmas ornaments that double as V-Day decorations

Funfetti cupcakes in heart-shaped cupcake tins with pink glitter heart sprinkles

Even the inside was pink and red :)

Valentine-making supplies

A few of the Valentines I made

Early V-Day date night. Rain, candles, red wine, pizzas from Whole Foods, Frank Sinatra Pandora station.

I went with classic red this year. Predictable, but actually a really rare color for me.

One last time...Happy Hearts Day xoxo
